Façade Pipes

The greatest display of ingenuity and taste is to be found in the design of the organ case and its façade, or front pipes.  Therefore, proper selection of the displayed pipework is of the greatest importance.

Over the past several years we here at Hupalo & Repasky have noticed a trend toward utilization of copper flue pipes for an organ's façade pipework.  This has several advantages.  Firstly, copper pipes are available in a variety of finishes; plain, which will develop a patina; highly polished and lacquered, which will preserve the copper's natural luster; and flamed, which produces a blaze of colored patterns.  Secondly,  we feel copper pipes are stronger than  traditional zinc and tin/lead alloy façade pipes.  Thirdly, copper is a fairly economical metal and is readily available.

Besides making copper façade pipes for many California organs, our most notable façade work was for the Jacoby Symphony Hall of Jacksonville, Florida, overseen by Quimby Pipe Organs, Inc.
